Davido Didn’t Help Zlatan Ibile With His Release From EFCC; Why Didn’t He Debunk The Claims?

Over the weekend, news quickly spread that controversial UK-based Afrobeats act Naira Marley was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) shortly after his arrival into the country. It was reported that popular street artist Zlatan Ibile and some other guys were arrested as well. This was as a consequence of Naira Marley’s comments about internet fraud and his defiance that resulted in a song titled Am I a Yahoo Boy.

Five people detained by EFCC

Reports had it that they were apprehended in Zlatan’s house in Lekki. Five men including Azeez Fashola (Naira Marley) and Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael(Zlatan Ibile) were taken by EFCC. Some incriminating materials were said to have been found on them. As usual, there was a lot of reactions from people on social media, most of who frowned heavily on fraud while the rest either trolled the detainees or questioned the motive behind the arrest.

Some celebrities reacted to the situation too. Davido was one of the loudest, taking to his social media pages to express his displeasure. The Afrobeats star has a good relationship with both Naira Marley and Zlatan Ibile. He promised that he was going to hire a lawyer for them both so as to immediately resolve whatever issues they faced. To the surprise of many, they – the detainees – were held for a couple of days.

Eventually, Zlatan Ibile and three others were released some days ago, leaving Naira Marley in detention. As Zlatan’s fans celebrated the rapper’s release, Davido was praised for playing a key role in the release. Rumors flew around that it was the lawyer hired by Davido that expedited Zlatan’s release. This rumor was fueled by Davido’s comment on Instablog as well as his post on Instagram with the caption; “Zankuuu Free ! People love u sha! Oya go back to making History @zlatan_ibile”

However, things sharply took a turn when public figure Aremo Gucci posted a video on Instagram. According to Aremo Gucci, Davido was not responsible for Zlatan’s release but Olamide and Burna Boy. He urged people to stop peddling stories that were untrue. The news resulted in a backlash which saw Davido’s name being dragged in the mud. The DMW boss was censured for claiming glory which belonged to another.

Davido responded to the social media upheaval by deleting Zlatan’s picture from his page and unfollowing the Zanku crooner. This brings up a lot of questions, one of which is “Did Davido really have to unfollow Zlatan?” Undoubtedly, Davido can do whatever he desires with his Instagram account. It’s just strange that it reached such a point where he unfollowed Zlatan.

Although Davido unfollowing Zlatan doesn’t bother me as much as his decision to not debunk claims that he had no hand in Zlatan’s release. I believe the ongoing situation to be a sensitive one and it would have been better to just clear the air. Perhaps Davido had reasons for not quelling the flames of the rumor, it would only be seen by the general public as selfishness and fake love. Hopefully, the crack in the relationship between Zlatan and Davido is not irreparable.
