TheCable reports that he tendered his resignation letter on Thursday following a recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC), that he be compulsorily retired from his position on the basis of misconduct.
The resignation is reported to be the best possible option for the embattled Onnoghen, who is now in line to receive the benefits of a retired Chief Justice of Nigeria. As part of the package for retired chief justice, a house will be built for him in Abuja with a nine-digit sum for furnishing. He will also be entitled to a severance gratuity that is 300% of his annual basic salary of N3,363,972.50, as well as a pension for life.
However, a dismissal will deny him of all the benefits.
