Olawunmi Adegoke: Be Thankful

There sure are many reasons why we should be thankful, but many times, when we look at situations and circumstances of our lives right now, it might seem there ain’t any special reason to be thankful. But do you know that thankfulness is a state of the mind and it really isn’t about what you have or don’t have? Thankfulness is that state you purposely set your mind at for your own good and benefit.Thankfulness means being grateful for where your life is while hoping for better. If you looked back at where you are right now, you will discover that many changes have happened in your life. The opportunities, the triumphs and the seeming disappointments. Most times, people are not thankful because that they do not think back to where they have been, where they are right now, to see the many victories they have won along the way.

Most people always keep focusing on the things they feel they don’t have, and hence never see reasons why they should be thankful. Thankfulness is linked with contentment, it is a deliberate choice you make. The truth is, there is no amount of material possession that can satisfy the true longings of the heart. At best it will give a temporary satisfaction, but in the long run, lasting satisfaction is independent of material, possessions.If you have been never been a thankful person before now, these things can help you start becoming more thankful.

Take Stock Of What You Have Right Now
The more you keep ruminating over the things you have in your life, the more you keep seeing how far you have come. A lot of times, people do not even know what they have been through, or what they have achieved. This might not really be their fault, because as we humans, we have been wired to keep reaching and aiming for more in life. Even while aiming for greater heights in life, you still need to be thankful for where you are. And to be truly thankful, you need to take stock of your life, to see those things you have achieved in the past.

Be Thankful For The Things You Don’t Yet Have
Sometimes what we think we want,  we aren’t actually ready to handle them right NOW. It could be that we aren’t prepared for them or we might not even be prepared to handle the victory when it comes. So Instead of beating yourself up over the things you don’t yet have,(which most likely you don’t know the reason why), choose to be thankful for the things you have. Being thankful for what you have puts you in a better position of seeing new opportunities for receiving the very things you desire. 

Place Yourself In The Right Environment
Do you know that a lot of times our disposition in life is greatly influenced by the kind for the environment we find ourselves in? And this is the same for having a thankful disposition. If you surround yourself with people who know how to be thankful for the little things of life, those who know how to rejoice in whatever situation they find themselves, it won’t be so long before you catch the same vibes of thankfulness.

Everyone goes through life moments and tough situations. We all have our own fair share of life. But whatever we see/ face should never affect our disposition to life. Choose to be thankful for the little things such as the free gift of air, for nature and even the people around you. Develop this habit of thankfulness and see how things will work in your good favour.
