Mali’s Prime Minister & Entire Cabinet resign amid Ethnic Violence

Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga

Prime Minister of Mali Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga and his entire government have resigned, a statement by the country’s secretary general has said.

CNN reports that President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta accepted the mass resignation and thanked the public officers for their “loyalty” and “high sense of duty.”

The resignation comes after ethnic violence that has plagued the country. Only last month, AFP reports that 160 people were massacred in a village in central Mali, the region’s Fulani ethnic community.

UN said that the region is frequently targeted and accused of having ties to jihadist organizations in the area.

Also, Malian army posts are frequently attacked by seperatists and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, according to CNN.

A prime minister will be named very soon and a new government will be put in place after consultations with all political forces, the statement from the government said.
