TechTalk with Confidence Staveley: How to Lock WhatsApp on iPhone with Facial or Finger Print Biometric

I was at this beautiful restaurant a few days ago and these girls on the table sitting next to mine were chatting about a mutual friend. I am not sure they realized how loud their voices were, because I wasn’t even trying to listen in on their conversation o (before you call me gbegborun), but I could overhear all they were saying. Summary of the whole gist was: a certain Mrs. A suspected her husband was having an affair so she put on her FBI hat and set out to check his phone. Mrs. A knew Mr. A’s phone password, so at night she grabbed his phone, went through his WhatsApp messages, and found messages exchanged between her husband and numerous women. Mrs. A read messages that were so shocking the phone dropped from her hands. Startled by the sound, Mr. A scrambled to his feet and rushed in the direction of the noise like a fire fighter would, but on seeing his phone on the floor and the expression on his wife’s face, he froze. If you are waiting for the end of this gist, sorry o, this bus has reached my own destination, and I don come down. Will you follow me to my house because you want to continue hearing gist?

Imagine Mr. A had enabled this new WhatsApp lock feature I am about to show you, Mrs. A wouldn’t have gained access to his chats and experienced the heartache she’s currently going through. On a more serious note, though, I am not endorsing cheating or the cover up of same by sharing this tech tip. Although avoiding the above scenario may be reason enough for some individuals will activate this feature, in my opinion, it is simply an additional security feature to ensure your WhatsApp messages are not read by unauthorized persons, even if your iPhone is stolen.

Access to WhatsApp’s iOS app can now be protected using the inbuilt bio-metric technology such as fingerprint or face recognition. For small small English, I dey try talk say: you fit lock your WhatsApp now; if nor be you press ya hand or show face for camera, Wasap nor go open o. This is now possible on the latest version of the messaging app on iOS, launched February 2019. Once you set this up, people will be unable to access your WhatsApp chats without unlocking the app using either Touch or Face ID, even if your phone is unlocked.

To activate this feature:

  • Open WhatsApp.
  • Tap the settings icon on the bottom-right corner of your screen.
  • Tap Account.
  • Tap Privacy.
  • Scroll down and tap Screen Lock.
  • Depending on your iPhone model, you’ll get the option of either Face ID or Touch ID to restrict access to the software. If you are using iPhone X or newer models that support Face ID, then you can use Face ID to lock WhatsApp. iPhone versions older than the iPhone X only get the Touch ID option. Slide the toggle switch to the right, to enable “Require Touch ID” or “Require Face ID” as it applies to your phone model.
  • Next, tap any one of the four options to select the amount of time after which you would like to activate the lock. You have the following options: Immediately, After 1 minute, After 15 minutes, After 1 hour.

Sadly, at the moment, this feature is only available for the iOS version of WhatsApp. Android users, wuna doh o, I believe an Android release is on the way as well.

All the extra information you need to know:

  • Although you can lock the app itself, you still can’t secure your messages on a per-chat basis.
  • Your WhatsApp message previews, if enabled, is still visible. That means you or anyone else can see messages in the preview and do quick replies on your phone without having to unlock WhatsApp.
  • You can still answer WhatsApp calls if the app is locked.
  • Pictures sent via WhatsApp are saved on your camera roll and can be accessed if your phone is already unlocked or doesn’t have a lock at all.
  • If you are using an older model iPhone (like iPhone 5), you will not be able to use this feature, because the Touch ID/Face ID is not available on your phone.

What is your take on this feature? Will you be enabling it on your iPhone? If yes, why? Please, share your thoughts in the comment section.
