How #BellaNaijaMCM Ugochukwu Ifediora is Tackling Power Challenges with iMeter

Nigeria has a power problem, there’s no argument against that. From lack of adequate power, to inaccessibility of the available power, to tampering of meters, to vandalisation of power equipment and facilities, and the issue of overpriced bills, the power sector of the country needs a lot of work.

#BellaNaijaMCM this week Ugochukwu Ifediora built what he called Intelligent Meter (iMeter) to solve part of the power sector challenges in Nigeria.

Using advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), Ugochukwu built the smart meter which measures energy usage and connects to cell phones or computers that have the AMI software on them.

It solves the problem of meter tampering and ensures and ensures that consumers are billed only for the energy they use. It also allows a two-way communication between power companies and their customers.

Customers, using Ugochukwu’s product, can manage their smart meters remotely. They can monitor power usage, set budgets, disconnect their meters and make payments. For people with limited internet access, select services can be accessed through text.

The system detects tampering and notifies the power companies, discourages vandalism of power equipment, improves power supplies for communities and reduces deaths by electrocution.

iMeter was created under Ugochukwu’s Fedironics IMC where he’s co-founder and CEO. He founded the company in 2015.

Ugochukwu holds a B.Eng degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), certifications in Business and Entrepreneurship from Lagos Business School and Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative, Cape Town.

He cut his teeth in electrical and electronics engineering as an assistant project manager for an engineering company, then went on to work as an electrical engineer at Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

Ugochukwu is a 2018 finalist for the UK Royal Academy‘s Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation.

In 2016, Fedironics was also recognised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at its ITU Telecom World Awards for their “excellence and innovation in ICT solutions with social impact.”

Ugochukwu currently works the Anambra State Government as an Adviser to the governor on Power Sector Development.
