Pearl Thusi stars in Netflix’s first African original series, Queen Sono’

Netflix has just rolled out its first African original series, Queen Sono, the first of many to come as the platform plans to incorporate African original series to its slate of programming. In essence, more African content like we have never seen. Filming for Queen Sono is scheduled to begin next year, and it stars South African actress and Quantico star Pearl Thusi.
According to Shadow and Act, Queen Sono is a spy dramedy and Thusi will play “a highly trained top spy in a South African agency whose purpose is to better the lives of African citizens. While taking on her most dangerous mission yet, she must also face challenging relationships in personal life.”

The plot synopsis is simple enough. Most importantly, there are parallels between Queen Sono and Thusi’s Dayana Mampasi in Quantico, wherein she plays a CIA agent. “Taking talent like this and telling stories to the rest of the world puts Pearl in the same category as other strong female characters like Claire Underwood in ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Jessica Jones.’ Over time our roots will get deeper in Africa and South Africa, and we are moving pretty quickly to that now and plan to invest more in local content,” said Erik Barmack, Netflix’s Vice President of International Originals.
Queen Sono will be helmed by Kasigo Lediga, who is known for directing the dark romantic comedy Catching Feelings.
