After the cliffhanger of the last episode of Ojukwu wherein the Great Priestess announced to Odili that she’s carrying his child, the latest instalment of the show conveys the characters making decisions. Urenna, the sister of Adanna and daughter of Udoka, made the decision to visit Agu in his village. Their relationship is beginning to solidify into something serious, having gone past that culturally resonant moment in episode 2 where Agu harassed her at the stream while fetching water.

Odili has made the decision to marry Adanna, to whom he is betrothed to. It’s impulsive and the reason stems from the fact he inexplicably impregnated the Great Priestess. But as we already know, she isn’t the only one pregnant. Odili briefly had an affair with a maiden in the village and she’s angry that he doesn’t want to take responsibility for the child. So she visits the Great Priestess at the shrine to ask her what to do. The scene itself is complex for portraying female solidarity and how patriarchy makes women suffer.
“I am a woman like you,” the Great Priestess says to the maiden, absorbing her account of being mistreated by the man that impregnated her and wants nothing to do with her. The Great Priestess doesn’t know that it’s Odili – the maiden keeps this information to the very end, encouraged by the Priestess’ desire to help her solve her problems. “His name is Odili the Great Warrior” she later reveals to the Priestess and her reaction is priceless. The maiden is rebuked and slut-shamed, and told to run away from the village to have her baby.
The episode ends with the Priestess invading Udoka’s compound and interrupting the wedding ceremony between Odili and Adanna. The guests and some members of the Elders’ Council are shocked. Will she reveal that she is carrying Odili’s child in the next episode? This is enough to cause a disaster, moreso for Odili’s reputation. I like the fact that the characters are constantly dealing with conflicts and trying to resolve them. You can watch Ojukwu on Monday, 7:10pm (WAT) on ROK 2 (DSTv and GOTv).
