#WorldCup Roundup: Subasic’s goalkeeping masterclass sends Croatia to the Quarter-Final ahead of Denmark

Danijel Subasic was the star of the moment as he saved three penalties in the penalty shootout against Denmark to ensure  Croatia’s qualification to the second round. Kasper Schmeichel was otherwise another star of the show with his heroic performances as he saved two penalties in the shootout but it sadly was not enough to seal victory. One can say the quality of the penalties were very poor.

Croatia fell a goal down to Denmark seconds after kick off with Nicolai Joergensen tapping into the net after a scrabble in the Croatian box. It became a tale of very early goals as Mario Mandzukic capitalised on poor defending to draw Croatia level in the 4th minute. There was very little clear cut chances after that and Luka Modric was unable to convert a golden chance when Ante Rebic was brought down in the box. However Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel dived low and hard to leave Modric rueing a missed opportunity.

Both teams could not create any clear cut chances to book a Quarter-Final spot in 90 minutes and were forced to go into extra time – the second game today that went the long haul. Surprisingly, Denmark where perhaps the most promising side and Croatia seemed more interested in breaking on the counter.

Therefore hosts Russia will face Croatia in their World Cup quarter-final clash on Friday.
